Non-Gaming Amenities Sizzle in North Hall at G2E 2009

LAS VEGAS — Despite the economic challenges of the past year, non-gaming amenities continue to be an important part of the customer experience at casino resorts across the United States and around the world. At Global Gaming Expo (G2E) 2009, gaming executives will have an opportunity to see the latest trends in food and beverage (F&B), as well as entertainment, in G2E's North Hall. G2E 2009 is scheduled for Nov. 17-19 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

"Consumers have come to expect casino resorts to bring together world-class entertainment, exceptional dining experiences with an enjoyable gaming environment. As we look to the future, non-gaming amenities will continue to be a crucial part of a successful business plan for casino properties," said Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr., president and CEO of the American Gaming Association. "By bringing the latest trends in F&B and entertainment together with the newest innovations for the gaming floor, G2E provides gaming professionals a comprehensive, one-stop shop for their business needs."

G2E 2009 attendees will gain exclusive insight into the changing world of F&B and non-gaming amenities through the Retail, Dining and Entertainment (R, D & E) conference track. In the track's signature series session, "The Sweet Spot: How to Manage F&B in a Down Economy," attendees will learn how to redefine the F&B value proposition and develop an effective plan to deal with current economic challenges. The panel for this session will include leading F&B executives Jeffrey Frederick, regional vice president of food and beverage for Harrah's Entertainment, Inc.; Michael Mina, chef/restaurateur with Mina Group, LLC; and Damian Mogavero, CEO and founder of Avero.

The R, D & E track also will provide valuable insights for professionals working in the entertainment sector of the gaming industry with sessions such as "Entertainment 101: Negotiation, Contracts and Concepts," "Casinos and Celebrities: How to Market Your Casino with A-list Entertainment," and "Now for Something Completely Different: How to Create Out-Of-The Box Special Events."

In the exhibition area, F&B and entertainment executives will have the opportunity to preview products and network with more than 120 exhibitors offering the latest product innovations in everything from lighting design to stemware. As part of F&B at G2E, the Fine Wines & Cocktails Ultra Lounge sponsored by Southern Wine & Spirits will highlight choice beverage offerings from a number of word-class vendors and vineyards.

Attendees also will have a chance to see the latest F&B trends and innovations in action on the F&B at G2E Culinary Demonstration Stage. The schedule of events includes all-star Las Vegas chefs heating things up in the Neon Chefs demonstration series, cool G2E Cocktail demonstrations by master mixologists and the sizzling Ultra Lounge Uniform Fashion Show sponsored by Cintas, featuring the sexiest uniforms from leading casino ultra lounges and nightclubs on the Las Vegas Strip.

In the Entertainment Arena at G2E, attendees will have the opportunity to view new technologies and meet with exhibitors whose products and services help create the spectacular shows now associated with America's casino industry. The Entertainment Arena at G2E will include manufacturers of the latest in professional audio and lighting, staging, and projection/video products as well as entertainment agents, concert and sports promoters, independent producers, production companies, touring artists and attractions.

Gaming executives interested in securing new acts for their casino properties also will have the opportunity to see a wide array of 30 talented musical, comedy and entertainment artists perform live as part of the G2E Entertainment Arena's offerings. The G2E Entertainment Showcase Stage will be located in the lobby featuring musical and comedy acts, and the all-new G2E Variety Entertainment Showcase Stage will make its debut in the North Hall featuring jugglers, magicians and other unique variety performers.

Award-Winning Pican Ideal for Intimate NorCal Events and Dinners

OAKLAND, Calif. — Picán restaurant in Oakland's Uptown District has been honored by inclusion in the esteemed Michelin Guide as a 2010 choice in the Bib Gourmand category. The distinction is awarded to restaurants deemed the "inspectors' favorite for good value." All restaurants on the 2010 Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand list serve a meal – defined as two dishes and a glass of wine or dessert – for $40 or less, offering an "affordable, yet incredibly delicious dining option," according to the guide.

Picán, which opened in March, is a contemporary, sophisticated restaurant in Oakland's burgeoning Uptown District that serves modern, California-influenced Southern cuisine and offers an extensive collection of handmade, single-batch bourbons.
"We are honored to receive this distinction from the 2010 Michelin Guide," said Picán visionary and proprietor Michael LeBlanc. "I am so proud of our team, led by Executive Chef Dean Dupuis. As a resident of Oakland, I knew this restaurant had the potential to be something special, a transformational part of the Uptown neighborhood's renewal. It's thrilling for everyone who works so hard at Picán to receive this honor in our first year of operation."

LeBlanc, who grew up in New Orleans, was the first African-American corporate office in the history of Polaroid, running the Asian market and traveling the globe during his 26-year stint with the company. During his travels Le Blanc gained an appreciation for international cuisine and for the diverse cultures of the world, all the while retaining his passion for the food of his childhood.

Executive Chef Dean Dupuis, who hails from Atlanta's South City Kitchen, brought LeBlanc's vision to life with dishes that have won critical acclaim throughout Northern California. Dupuis quickly gained acclaim for his Buttermilk Southern Fried Chicken, which is brined and coated in buttermilk and hot sauce for 48 hours before cooking. Guests are advised to reserve Dupuis' fried chicken in advance when they make their dinner reservations.

Other favorite dishes at Picán include:
· Southern Caesar Salad with fried okra and parmesan grits croutons
· Low Country Shrimp & Grits
· Bourbon & Molasses Lacquered Duck
· Georgia Pecan Tart with buttermilk ice cream and bourbon butterscotch
· Chocolate Bread Pudding
· Abita Root Beer Float with sassafras ice cream and a bourbon praline

Picán is located at 2295 Broadway in Oakland. Picán has a stunning bar and lounge, featuring an extensive collection of handmade, single-batch bourbons, and an open kitchen. Design details include reclaimed pecan wood featured throughout the restaurant, deep shades of reds and browns, and richly textured fabrics and materials. The ambience is accented with the rhythms of jazz, R&B, gospel and classic soul. The 5,600-square-foot restaurant includes seating for 158 guests in Picán's bar, lounge and main dining room, plus outdoor seating for 24 on Picán's patio. "The Bourbon Room," Picán's intimate private dining room, accommodates an additional 20 guests.

Picán is open nightly Monday – Thursday, 4:30 – 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 5 – 11 p.m., and Sundays, 4 – 9:30 p.m. Lunch is served weekdays 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Sunday brunch is served 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Valet parking is available. Reservations can be made by calling 510-834-1000. For more information, visit www.PicanRestaurant.com.

Industry demonstrates resilience in face of uncertainty

Despite uncertainty in the overall economy, the 2009 SEMA Show demonstrated the resilience and determination of the specialty-equipment industry.

More than 1,700 businesses committed to their futures by exhibiting at the 2009 SEMA Show. And those businesses were not just along for the ride, but were actively innovating. Collectively, they showcased more than 1,400 new products.
And as a result of increased floor space and a new location for the New Products Showcase, buyers made a record-high 65,000 scans, requesting additional product information.

Overall, 120,000 members of the industry attended this year's show, with the largest number ever coming from outside the United States. Roughly 24% of registered buyers came from outside the United States, demonstrating the increased global reach of the specialty-equipment industry and the ability of the SEMA Show to connect buyers and manufacturers across global lines.
The media reach of the SEMA Show was also larger than ever, bringing the industry's products and style to an ever-growing audience. This year, for example, enough showgoers posted items about products and vehicles to their Twitter accounts to push the SEMA Show into Twitter.com's Top 10 trends.

"One hundred percent of the businesses who attended the SEMA Show put it all on the line," said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. "This is an excellent indicator that buyers, manufacturers and services in this industry are ready for an active 2010."

SEMA and California Agencies Solve Titling Dilemma for Hobbyist Vehicles

Diamond Bar, CA (November 2, 2009) -- SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Market Association, working on behalf of California enthusiasts of specialty vehicles (street rods, custom vehicles, kit cars and replicas) and in cooperation with the Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Automotive Repair, Air Resources Board and Attorney General's office has resolved a complex and threatening issue to this market segment and the industry it serves.  "This breakthrough procedure allows owners of certain specially constructed vehicles (SCVs) to avoid the pitfalls of a previously muddy process for legally registering and titling such vehicles in California," said Steve McDonald, SEMA Vice President of Government Affairs.  "Under this process, vehicle owners can avoid a situation that could have led to confiscated SCVs and law enforcement action. Further, the program now permits these vehicles to demonstrate state emissions-compliance requirements."

Over the years, California's complex vehicle registration laws have created confusion for hobbyists and the state employees who administer the regulations.  Consequently, certain SCVs may be erroneously registered or titled.  SEMA has worked with state agencies to address the interests of all parties, including enthusiasts in the SCV market, so that these vehicles can be properly registered and titled in the state.

"Given the looming threat of prosecution that owners of specially constructed vehicles were facing, SEMA's charge was to find an equitable solution that provided these owners a reasonable period of time to voluntarily re-title their vehicles and pay any necessary back taxes and fees," said SEMA General Counsel Russ Deane.  "After five years of work on these issues, an innovative and ground-breaking solution has been created."

Last year, SEMA helped enact into law a program whereby the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) would develop and administer a vehicle registration amnesty program.  The amnesty program will be in effect from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010 and will apply to vehicles that were previously registered or classified under erroneous or illegal circumstances.  Under this new law, the DMV will grant amnesty from prosecution to a vehicle owner if certain conditions are met, including the owner filing a completed application with the department.

More recently, a process was established to allow specially constructed vehicle owners that have been granted amnesty to avail themselves of emissions requirements that recognize the unique nature of these vehicles.  While there are still details to be concluded, SEMA has reached a tentative agreement with the state to provide for three methods to achieve compliance.

First, an owner can pay all back taxes and penalties and apply for one of 500 (per year) smog-check exemptions.  Under California law, these 500 exemptions for specially constructed vehicles are available each year on a first come, first served basis.  For vehicles with an exemption, a smog test referee compares the vehicle to production cars of the era that the specially constructed vehicle most closely resembles to determine the model year.  The vehicle owner can then choose whether the inspector will certify the vehicle model year by body type or by the engine model year.  Only those emissions controls applicable to the chosen model year are required.  California law authorizes a $160 fee for each referee inspection.

Under a second option, SCV owners can pay all back taxes and penalties and then choose to install one of several approved OEM engines and related powertrain components (GM has secured approval for certain engines thus far).  Using these OEM components and specifications for the construction of an approved fuel tank and delivery system, these engines provide performance-level power and are intended to meet California emissions compliance requirements.  "The GM engine package represents another option for SCV owners seeking to legally register and title their vehicles," commented SEMA Technical Consultant, Jim McFarland.  "In fact, by using one of these engines, it's also possible for owners of amnesty vehicles to exchange their existing engines for a powertrain that represents the latest in GM's emissions and performance-related technologies.  However, McFarland indicated that because certain variables are involved when configuring any engine or powertrain package for emissions purposes, some measure of compliance risk is involved when such components are installed in a range of vehicle types and conditions.

Finally, working under the banner of the "GreenRod Project" and recognizing that the demand for the 500 exemptions greatly exceeds the supply, SEMA configured a kit of emissions-related aftermarket parts that met California smog-check standards during a series of tests on a project vehicle.  An owner can pay all back taxes and penalties and, if the owner is not able to obtain one of the 500 available exemptions, a "retrofit kit" of parts can be installed.  Major components in the kit include an aftermarket electronic fuel injection (EFI) system, EFI controller, exhaust headers,  camshaft, mufflers and catalytic converters. For the purposes of the GreenRod Project, the retrofit kit was installed on a high-mileage 1980 El Camino fitted with a 1986 carbureted, 5.7 liter engine.  The 5.7 liter/350 cubic inch displacement small-block Chevrolet V8 engine is one of the most widely-used engine platforms for all types of specially constructed vehicles.

According to McFarland, "While the engine SEMA used to develop the kit was considered a worst case configuration, it still passed smog-check requirements.  Variables such as engine condition, accumulated mileage, and related factors affecting emissions from these parts may, in some cases, cause similar engines not to meet acceptable emissions levels.  Nonetheless, transitioning from a carbureted environment to a fuel injected environment while utilizing the latest controller technology and emissions parts upgrades available from the specialty equipment industry resulted in dramatic and unprecedented reductions in tailpipe and evaporative emissions on the test vehicle.  The retrofit kit actually improved performance and drivability while not limiting power in a full acceleration mode, compared to a carbureted engine.  It was perhaps the first time a package of specialty aftermarket parts has been assembled for the purpose of reducing tailpipe emissions which did not reduce power or performance."

"Given the seriousness of the title and registration issue in California, SEMA's work with the state agencies to create practical solutions for specialty vehicle owners, both now and in the future, is an outstanding accomplishment," said So Cal Speed Shop owner, Pete Chapouris.

SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Market Association founded in 1963, represents the $31.85 billion specialty automotive industry of 7,144 member companies.  It is the authoritative source for research, data, trends and market growth information for the specialty auto parts industry.  The industry provides appearance, performance, comfort, convenience and technology products for passenger and recreational vehicles.  For more information, contact SEMA at 1575 S. Valley Vista Dr., Diamond Bar, CA 91765, tel. 909/396-0289, or visit www.sema.org and www.enjoythedrive.com

Shaq Vs a noisy casino

I felt little sorry for NBA Superstar Shaquile O’Neal as he searched for a working microphone during a press conference at Planet Hollywood last week.
O’Neal was at PH to promote an episode of his reality-type television show that challenges his athletic abilities in sports other than basketball.

So far he has been beaten by Olympians Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh in volleyball and lost a football challenge against Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Rothesberger. Soon he will be seen taking on Albert Pujols on the baseball diamond.
For this episode Shaq was in Las Vegas to take on semi-retired boxer Oscar de la Hoya in friendly, yet competitive boxing match.

When I received an e-mail regarding this press conference, I was mildly interested. It was curiosity that finally got the beast of me and I opted to RSVP and attend.

I would leave realizing that Planet Hollywood needs a course in planning a press conference.

I arrived minutes before the 12:30 p.m. scheduled time and followed the crowd to the center of the casino where a press table had been temporarily placed in small lounge area surrounded by card tables. Fans has already lined up in hopes of catching a glimpse of the newest member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. I flashed a business card and found a path to the press area and did my best to hold my spot among the small herd of reporters and a battery of video cameras. I took out my smartphone and began to twitter and post entries to Facebook and waited for de la Hoya and O’Neal to make their presence.

Lights behind the press table flashed on and off. Someone was testing the microphones. Release forms were passed out and filled since there was a chance that some reporters may be seen during the eventual broadcast of this particular episode of the new reality series “Shaq VS” on ABC.

De la Hoya showed up and was greeted with a few cheers. He took his seat didn’t seem to mind that he was not the center of attention this day.

After a few moments a loud cheer from the fans let everyone know that Shaq was on his way. He was not hard to spot. He stood out of the crowd in the same way a Hummer would stand out in lot full of Volkswagon Beetles.

It was obvious there were problems from the moment the MC stood at the podium to make the introductions. It was difficult to hear the introductions. The microphones did not work properly and even though O’Neal is a big guy, he does not have a loud voice. It was hard to hear his remarks.

De la Hoya was a bit easier to hear at time and he reminded the crowd of the time Bruce Lee defeated Kareem Abdul Jabbar in a well-know film — Game of Death.

I’m sure that the setting was selected to add to the glamour of a Las Vegas fight between two big names. Perhaps Planet Hollywood and ABC knew it was doing with the overly bright lights and constant clanging of gaming machines.
I have seen better presentations and acoustics at CES, G2E or many other trade shows at any of the convention centers in Las Vegas.
It remains to be seen if the press conference will look better on TV than in person. I will probably look for the episode just to see the final results.

Meanwhile the ratings have been questionable for Shaq Vs according to the Nielson ratings service.
In a Los Angeles Times report the debut of ABC's newest reality show, "Shaq Vs.," where Shaquille O'Neal tested his quarterback skills against Ben Roethlisberger, wasn’t a ratings hit. The show ranked fourth among programs that began at 9 p.m., with an average of 4.2 million viewers (292,000 average viewership in Los Angeles).

I actually saw the episode where Shaq took on May and Walsh on the sand courts of Hermosa Beach, Calif. The best part was seeing Shaq walking along the beach in pink speedos after losing to the Olympians.

I'll be checking the TV listings to see when the Las Vegas epsiode will be aired.

Think of Mother Earth this week

I hope everyone has a great Earth Day week where ever you may be.

It seems these days that no matter where you look or what you read, you will see a message to help "Green" your trade show, personal life or working environment. I am all for a better world, cleaner water and recyclable exhibits.

I do what I can to help reduce waste but I know it is never enough. While walking my dogs on weekends I try to pick up discarded aluminum cans along the way and toss them into my growing pile inside my garage. It may be no more than a dime worth of aluminum, but I feel better for pick up cans while getting a little exercise with my two canine buddies.

I seem to be getting more e-mail about companies that are Going Green or continue Being Green and its good to read about conventions centers reducing waste.

This week I received an e-mail from Nimlok, a top display and trade show exhibit company.
"'Going green' is much more than a trend at Nimlok," said Simon Perutz, president of Nimlok. "It's our long-standing commitment to a business philosophy that is at the core of everything we have done for the last 37 years and what we will continue to do in the future."

In the US, and through its sister company near London, Nimlok, has set the pace in the exhibit industry by producing sustainable display and exhibit solutions. Reusability, use of recyclable content, reduction of harmful compounds and waste, and a system-wide approach to environmental responsibility underscore Nimlok's long-standing comprehensive commitment to green concerns, according to the press release.

In 2007, Nimlok initiated an exhibit recycling program, designed to keep old exhibits out of landfill sites. At the end of an exhibit's life, clients are invited to return it to Nimlok. Nimlok will then sort the components by content and return them to the recycle stream, at no additional cost to its clients. It is yet another facet of the total exhibiting solution that Nimlok provides.

Nimlok has also developed a "green" logo that is featured on all their green products, such as Velocity. A combination of the Nimlok logo and a symbol of the recycling stream, it makes the statement: Exhibiting Waste Reduction Since 1970. To read more about Nimlok efforts, CLICK HERE!
Recently, Sherwin-Williams unveiled a green trade show booth that displays products and environmental initiatives.

Sherwin-Williams, a leading provider of green products in the coatings industry, has taken its commitment a step further by unveiling an environmentally preferable trade show booth. The display, developed in collaboration with Opus Design, showcases the company's green products and environmental initiatives through innovative construction. Click here to read more.
From what I can tell, there are plenty of other companies doing their part to help the environment. Too many to mention in this space but send us your Green news and we'll do our best to share it with our readers.

Association membership has plenty to offer

Recently we made the decision to increase our networking capability by joining two of the industry’s top associations.

With all the trade show, meeting, destination and exhibit associations to choose from, we felt that TSEA and IAEE had plenty to offer us and would provide great opportunities to meet trade show and exhibit industry professionals. It is the members of both organizations that we want to meet and do business with. This is not to say that we are not interested in joining other associations, but the Trade Show Exhibitors Association and the International Association of Exhibitions and Events, just felt right for us right now.

My thanks go out to Stephen Schuldenfrei, president of TSEA for welcoming us into the association. I have always been interested in TSEA since attending my first TS2 during the summer of 2001 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. I have since been to Chicago twice for TS2 and this summer we hope to make a trip to Philadelphia for the next "Total Solutions Marketing for the Exhibit and Event Professional." Registration is now open. Here is a link to a TS2 page where a PDF can be downloaded. Registration can also be completed online.

The show has been growing since National Trade Productions took over and this year should provide more education and network opportunities. Attendees can take classes to put toward his or her goal to become a Certified Manager of Exhibits (CME).

Meanwhile, IAEE offers professionals to become Certified in Exhibition Management (CEM).

Last December I attended my first Expo! Expo! The show was held at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas so I did not have to travel far. I was very impressed with this show and it was great how so many people went out of their way to make me feel welcome. I attended the first-timers luncheon and learned a lot about the show and "IA double E."

I had the opportunity to meet IAEE President Steven Hacker, CAE; Jeff Price, IAEE 2007 chairman; and Randy Bauler, CEM, IAEE 2008 chairman.

It was Jim Letchworth, CEM, with GES, who introduced me to the Southwest Chapter, which includes Las Vegas and Southern California. As the chairman, he invited me to the chapter's reception later that night and it was there where I met many IAEE members who had nothing but optimism and praise for the association. That night a new board of directors was installed and I was able to meet Yolanda Stephens who took over as the chapter chair.

I knew I wanted to join IAEM and become involved with the association. The entire show was just tremendous.

The next Expo! Expo! is December 9-11 2008 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, Fla.

I am looking forward to more networking opportunities. With membership into two quality associations, I doubt I will have any trouble finding my way around the industry. I hope to be involved in any way possible. Meanwhile, let me know what Trade Show Expo can do for you.

Cheers for EXHIBITOR08

Exhibitor 2008 was another great gathering of trade show industry professionals. It was another educational experience and one I look forward to every year. There is always plenty to see and many people to meet. And never enough time to see everything.

I’d like to say thanks to everyone who attended and made it a worthwhile experience.

Although I live in Las Vegas, it is not easy for me to spend much time at the show. What time I do have I spend it by taking photos on the show floor and talking with as many people as possible. Please visit our Trade Show Expo photo gallery and see some of the photos from the show. Look for a short video on the show in the next eNewsletter. Hopefully I will put it together soon and share it with all our readers.

I don’t know about you, but I really enjoyed the welcome reception and the chance to walk through the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay Convention Center. It’s one of the best aquatic exhibits on the Las Vegas Strip. I found it appropriate for sushi to be served before visiting the sharks.

Exhibitor is always a great resource for the latest in products, services and trends in the trade show industry. But for those of you who missed MOD ’08, you missed a great opportunity for learning about the latest trends in modular booths. Hosted by Dan Hanover of Event Design Magazine, this event was held at the Four Seasons — just a short walk away from the Exhibitor show floor. This was the second year that Abex Exhibits and Octanorm partnered with many other sponsors to present this show. I was amazed by the latest in modular design as presented by Armen Gharabegian, founder and CEO or Ethos Design. Other speakers included Simon Burton creator of The Exhibiting Show UK, Robbie Blumenfeld of Abex and Alan Cordial of Calan Communications. All the speakers had insightful information to share.

The shrimp and crab was also great. Also, kudos to all the sponsores involved including K&S International, Rock-it Cargo, ExhibitForce.com, Dazian Rentals, Lounge22, Nuvista, Event Crowd, Entertainment Lighting Services, Interlock Structures and Convention Models & Talent. The only criticisms I have is that the show started late and there were some technical glitches with the sound system, but otherwise, I look forward to Mod ’09.

I hope you find lots of good information in this week’s newsletter. There is a bit more International news in this issue. You can also read about a new resort coming to Seattle, Wa. There are more people making news below as well.

Until next week, enjoy the Spring and have a good Easter!

Expo! Expo! My first time.

Las Vegas is the place to be if your business involves trade shows, meetings, conferences and destinations. This week Expo! Expo! is at the Mandalay Bay and it is my first time as an attendee. This is the annual meeting for the International Association of Exhibitions and Events. Or, as I have learned to call it — I-A_Double-E.

The first-timers luncheon was insightful and got me excited about the next two days. I acquired my badge, accepted my goody bag and read through the show book to see what I could expect during the next two days. Later that night I made my way to the Opening General Session and I was impressed by the presentation.

The Water Coolers kept things moving with their mixture of song, music and lyrics meant for the business savvy attendee. I got a laugh out of watching them act out a meeting planner's day, complete with invisible Blackberries.

Las Vegas Convention and Visitor's Authority President Rossi Ralenkotter provided a glimpse into the future of Las Vegas by mentioning the improvements and construction taking place in Las Vegas during the next few years. Expect more than 200,000 rooms to be added to Las Vegas by the 2010. The construction is not hard to miss and there always seems to be more room for another high-rise casino. If a lot is occupied… Las Vegas just seems to knock something old out of the way to make room for something new and huge.

The CEM class of 2007 was introduced and now I want to have an acronym after my name. It is not easy to get Certified in Exhibit Management and perhaps someday I can look into this program.

Closing out the night was a series of 60 Second Showcase presentations. With assistance from the Water Coolers, five companies presented innovative products recognized by IAEE. The ShowBot by Park's Peoples was very impressive. The use of the robot for booth presentations is a new concept and the ShowBot is capable of interacting while being entertaining. It moves smoothly on the stage and I wondered who had the controls. I was blown away by the presentation but I could not shake off the images from the film I Robot starring Will Smith.

I can't wait to hit the show floor. For photos from the show, be sure to visit Trade Show Expo and click the IAEE Photo banner on the home page.

SEMA in Las Vegas

The Specialty Equipment Market Association, or commonly known as SEMA Show 2007, had another tremendous turnout during its Oct. 29-Nov. 1 visit to Las Vegas. Lots of cars, plenty of engines and thousands of attendees.

There was just too much too see and by the end of my second day, my feet needed a break. This is a great show for auto enthusiast and shop owners.

Justice Department eats on U.S!

Here is something I found on CNN.com that just troubles me as a taxpayer and as someone who has an interest in conferences.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Hungry attendees at Justice Department conferences have been enjoying millions of dollars in meatballs and other goodies courtesy of U.S. taxpayers, according to an inspector general's report released Friday.

The Justice Department paid more than $13,000 for cookies at conferences, says a report released Friday.

The report cited $5 meatballs and cans of soft drinks each costing $4.55 among reasons 10 conferences during 2005 and 2006 cost nearly $7 million.

One four-day conference of 1,500 people in Los Angeles cost the Justice Department $394,000 in August 2005.

"Overall this conference's daily food expense averaged $64 per registrant, which exceeded the approved federal per diem rate of $51 for meals," the report said.

The 128-page report does not suggest laws were broken, although it questions the Justice Department's judgment when it comes to the cost of its events.

In addition to the platters of Swedish meatballs and soda pop, the Justice Department paid more than $13,000 for cookies, according to the inspector general's office.

A Senate committee requested the report on Justice Department conferences, which, in fiscal year 2006, cost taxpayers nearly $46 million, including travel, programming, food and associated costs. Year to year costs show such meetings have totaled from $33.8 million in 2001 to a high of $58 million in 2004.

The 2005 Los Angeles event — which was called the "Weed and Seed" national conference — attracted particular attention from the audit's authors.

It "included a $53 per person two-entree and dessert lunch for 120 attendees, a one-hour $64,000 'Stars and Stripes' themed networking reception and a post-conference meeting for 30 DOJ employees who were provided a sandwich buffet lunch at a cost of $44 per person and an 'At the Movies' theme snack (candy, popcorn, and soft drinks) for an additional $25 per person," the report said.

The report, from the Office of Inspector General, Glenn Fine, expressed concern that most of the conference attendees failed to deduct their allowable per diem meal costs because they received free meals.

"When component managers do not systematically review vouchers to ensure that such deductions are made, the government effectively pays for the meals twice," the report said.

Another meeting detailed in the report was a 2006 COPS National Conference in Washington. Some 1,100 attendees were offered daily breakfast buffets, two lunches, a networking reception, and two "themed breaks."

"The networking reception itself cost more than $60,000 and included a chef-carved roast beef and turkey, a penne pasta station, and platters of Swedish meatballs at a cost of nearly $5 per meatball," the report said. "The average food and beverage cost per day for the COPS conference was $83 per attendee -- $19 dollars over the $64 federal per diem meal rate for Washington."

Among the report's recommendations: Planners should compare costs in multiple sites in multiple cities unless there is a special reason a meeting needs to be held in a particular city.

The report also called for developing conference food and beverage policies "to ensure adequate justification of significant food and beverage costs."

The Justice Department said it agreed with the recommendations.

Not easy finding time to blog

Blogging can be time consuming and it is difficult to find the time when working full time. Meanwhile I have a home-based trade show newspaper — Trade Show Expo —  that I am always working on. I try to add more content to the Web site and I also answer e-mail. Adding a blog was an idea that I hoped would be easy to do and may even get my business site noticed.

I missed a chanc to comment on Brittney, Sen. Craig and to pay homage to victims of 9/11. August and September have been busy months.

Today I found a Web site that address how to find the time to blog.

The Influential Marketing Blog by Rohit Bhargava had some good tips to blogging including:

  1. Set a realistic target. This is the first and most important rule. Expecting yourself to post every day is not only going to burn you out quickly ... it's probably also going to quickly make you feel like you are failing. My target is 3 high quality posts per week, and most weeks I can hit that. The quality is debatable ... but at least I don't have to finish each week feeling blog guilt ...

  2. Let go of your blog guilt. I had a great conversation with John Bell many months ago which I still remember, about the idea of blog guilt. We both have it, as most other bloggers do. It's that moment when you realize that you haven't posted for some extended amount of time, and you feel guilty for it. Even more dangerous is after blog guilt often comes writing paralysis when you are not sure what to write or feel that you should apologize for being absent. Get over it.

There are plenty of others to keep in mind but I don't have time to include them all here. To read more tips, visit his site by clicking here: IMB Blog.

There is still a lot for me to learn about blogging.

Remarks by the President after Tour of Interstate 35-W Bridge Damage

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--10:40 A.M. CDT

THE PRESIDENT: On behalf of the citizens of America, I bring prayers from the American people to those who suffered loss of life as a result of the collapse of the 35W bridge here in the Twin Cities. I bring the prayers of those who wonder about whether they'll ever see a loved one again.

First, I want to thank the Governor and the Mayor and the senators, members of the Congress for working in a coordinated way to respond to this tragedy. I have met with the Chief of Police and the Sheriff, rescue workers, people who represent men and women who are working as hard as they possibly can to save life and to find life; to go under these murky waters to find the facts.

And it's going to take a while, but I have been impressed by not only their determination, but have been impressed by their compassion. I have met people that were on the bridge -- I met a man who was on the bridge when it collapsed. His instinct was to run to a school bus of screaming children, and to help bring them to safety.

We have an amazing country, where people's instinct, first instinct, is to help save life. There's a lot of peoples' first instincts here in the Twin Cities was to save the lives of somebody who was hurting. And I know the people of this community thank their fellow citizens who did that.

I'm here with the Secretary of Transportation, because our message to the Twin Cities is, we want to get this bridge rebuilt as quick as possible; that we understand this is a main artery of life here; that people count on this bridge and this highway system to get to work. There's a lot of paperwork involved with government. One of our jobs is to work with the Governor and the Mayor and the senators and the members of the Congress to cut through that paperwork, and to see if we can't get this bridge rebuilt in a way that not only expedites the flow of traffic, but in a way that can stand the test of time.

I make no promises on the timetable. I do promise that Mary Peters, the Secretary of Transportation, is going to be in charge of this project. I do promise she's going to listen to the local authorities to find out what the folks here need. I do promise that when she sees roadblocks and hurdles in the way of getting the job done, she'll do everything she can to eliminate them.

Out of these tragedies can come a better life. And I, having visited with the people here, believe that not only are they committed to a better life, not only are they committed to turning something ugly into something good, but it's going to happen.

So I'm proud to be with you. Thank you for your leadership. God bless the people of this part of the world. Thank you.

Fires burn in Lake Tahoe

It is difficult to distance myself from a place I once called home no matter how many years go by.

I spent a few years in the Lake Tahoe area after college graduation. It was where I once worked as a sports writer covering snow and high school sports. As I read the news reports of the damage being incurred by a "monster fire" it is difficult not to remember the many places I rode a mountain bike or the areas I hiked. Lake Tahoe, bar none, is the most beautiful place I have ever lived and perhaps the most beautiful location in the Western United States. The scenery and the recreation combine to provide anyone plenty of things to do.

It is also near the Nevada stateline so there is also the casino and gambling element that attracts many people to the shorelines of the bluest lake in the world.
Reading about the fires is difficult when I know the roads so well and I still know a few people who live there. I once worked for the Tahoe Daily Tribune and across the street many people are seeking shelter inside the recreation center. Fire was always a concern in the area and on Sunday afternoon a community-wide nightmare began. More than 2,000 acres have been burning and more than 200 structures have been destroyed. This include many homes and businesses.

I just hope the winds calm down so that the fire fighter can get control of the blaze.

A state of emergency has been declared in South Lake Tahoe. With an estimated $100 million in damage and at least $1 billion in economic losses tallied, state officials have deemed El Dorado County as a disaster area as a result of the Angora fire that started Sunday afternoon in the North Upper Truckee area up to Tahoe Mountain on the South Shore.

The fire, which is being considered the worst for the South Shore in at least a half century, was still no more than percent contained on Monday. It has consumed about 2,500 acres and claimed 220 homes and other structures. No one has been reportedly injured, and no cause has been determined.

The fires came within 500 yards of South Tahoe High School and there is no confirmation that the high school has caught fire. South Tahoe High is the home of the Vikings. A school with an enrollment of about 1,500 and is know for its basketball and skiing programs. The football field is surrounded by forest and borders the wilderness. It is a great place to watch a game or to jog a few miles.

El Dorado County Sheriff Jeff Neves released a phone number in order for homeowners to check on the status of their homes at 530-541-5660 (ext. 336) or via www.edso.org. Incident command operations are in the process of moving to Heavenly Mountain Resort's California Base Lodge from Lake Tahoe Airport.

National Tourism Week Celebrates Nation’s $703 Billion Travel Industry

It's a great week to be a tourist. I wouldn't mind strolling through Washington D.C., Chicago, New Orleans, New York or Pittsburgh. Pick a city and there is probably something being done in that city to recognize tourism this week.

In Pittsburgh… VisitPittsburgh joins hundreds of cities, states and travel-related businesses nationwide in recognition of the 24th annual National Tourism Week, May 12-20. Designated by Congress and established by presidential proclamation in 1983, the event highlights the impact of the nation’s $703 billion travel industry and the economic and social contributions it brings to the Pittsburgh region.

This year’s theme, “Travel & Tourism: America’s Front Door,” illustrates the importance of travel to America’s image and suggests its impact as a leading industry for economic growth.

“Hotels and meeting facilities, attractions, restaurants and transportation providers are among the local businesses greatly impacted by travel to Pittsburgh and Its Countryside,” said Joe McGrath, president and CEO of VisitPittsburgh.

Each year, an estimated 10.2 million visitors come to the Greater Pittsburgh area. In 2005 that translated into almost $3 billion in economic impact. It’s worth noting that Allegheny County ranks first in the state for direct spending; and Pennsylvania ranks fourth in the nation for the number of tourists, right after California, Florida and Texas.

In addition, this industry employs nearly 50,000 people in Allegheny County and touches our community in countless other ways. “This week, we celebrate the value of tourism and the positive impact it makes on the economy. We are absolutely delighted to be able to showcase Pittsburgh, America’s most livable city.” said McGrath.

Nationwide, the U.S. travel industry directly employs 7.5 million people and generates payroll of $171 billion and tax revenues of about $105 billion. It ranks fifth among the 20 major industry sectors measured by the U.S. Census Bureau. Visitors to the U.S. spent more here than U.S. residents traveling abroad, creating a positive balance of trade of $7.4 billion for the national economy. Travel expenditures within the United States total $703 billion.

National Tourism Week is one of several Tourism Works for America® programs supported annually by the Travel Industry Association, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association that represents the common interests and concerns of travel in America.

Las Vegas meanwhile had a “LAS VEGAS MONORAIL SPY GAME” to celebrate National Tourism Week. Las Vegas-Based TBA Global Earns First-Place in the AdVenture Vegas Competition.

As mentioned in Trade Show Expo’s eNewletter last week, the adventure-seeking spirit of Las Vegas was on full display during AdVenture Vegas’ debut “Las Vegas Monorail Spy Game” competition, pitting the city’s top destination management companies (DMCs) in a head-to-head race in celebration of National Tourism Week. Top industry participants, who promote Las Vegas by profession, successfully utilized the Las Vegas Monorail to infiltrate the inner sanctum of the world-famous Las Vegas Strip and worked together following a trail of clues to sniff out actors portraying real, live spies in this first-of-its-kind adventure.

“It has been a pleasure to partner with AdVenture Vegas to debut the first ‘Las Vegas Monorail Spy Game’ and celebrate National Tourism Week with some of the most friendly, esteemed people who bring visitors to Las Vegas and promote our city as a premier destination,” said Ingrid Reisman, vice president of corporate communications for the Las Vegas Monorail Company. “We hope to do more events, activities and promotions that continue to increase the role of the Las Vegas Monorail as part of the Strip experience.”

Monorail photoDressed in themed attire, more than 70 people from Las Vegas’ leading DMCs, including Alan Waxler Group, Baskow and Associates, LT Eventions, Panache, PRA Destination Management, TBA Global, USA Hosts, and VegasHotSpots.com, teamed up to participate in the “Las Vegas Monorail Spy Game.” Culminating at Sprint Central, inside the Las Vegas Convention Center Monorail Station, was a festive awards reception where the first place team, Las Vegas-based TBA Global, was recognized with a “Las Vegas Monorail Spy Game” trophy, a $1,500 gift certificate from AdVenture Vegas and an office lunch to PF Chang’s China Bistro – in addition to exclusive bragging rights. VegasHotSpots.com was the second place winner and a three-way tie for third place was between Baskow and Associates, Panache, and USA Hosts with Baskow and Associates taking the victory by winning a cheer-off.

Enjoy the week you lucky tourists!

Spider-Man 3 and Mayweather highlight action-packed weekend

It was a huge weekend for sports and entertainment in Las Vegas and throughout the rest of the country. Check out Saturday's events: Kentucky Derby, baseball games, Big Boxing match in Las Vegas, basketball playoffs and another Super Hero film.

My question is: Who made more money? Spider-man or De La Hoya and Mayweather?

Spider-Man 3 set a half-dozen box-office records this weekend, including biggest debut with $148 million, according to studio estimates from Nielsen EDI. The opening handily reclaimed several benchmarks set last year by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, including biggest opening day and most single-day ticket sales.

It also provided a tantalizing salvo in the battle this summer between the major sequels of May: Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, which opens May 18, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which premieres May 25.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, De La Hoya made a guaranteed $25 million in an event hyped as the biggest in boxing history. His Golden Boy Promotions co-promoted the fight, so when all receipts are counted, he could haul in more than $40 million.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. was guaranteed $10 million but figures to collect more through his percentage of the pay-per-view sales.

Mayweather lived up to his billing as the favorite in this weekend's welterweight title fight with Oscar De La Hoya in Las Vegas. Despite a spirited challenge, Mayweather scored a split decision victory over De La Hoya before a sold-out, star-studded crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Saturday night. After the fight, the 30-year-old Mayweather said he's hanging up his gloves to pursue other interests, but many boxing experts predict Mayweather will return to the ring. With the win, Mayweather maintained his perfect career record, now at 38-0. Oscar fell to 38-5. The 34-year-old De La Hoya said he'll return to Puerto Rico and consider his future options. The bout set a record for highest grossing live gate revenue, and is also expected to set pay-per-view records when the final numbers come in later this week.

A horse named Street Sense also had a decent payday Saturaday at Churchill Downs. The purse for Kentucky Derby day totaled $2,210,000. The attendance of 156,000 adoring fans was the third largest in history. Queen Elizabeth, who owns horses, was also in attendance. This was her first Kentucky Derby.

But before De La Hoya and Mayweather were even taped for their fight, there came an announcement out of New York about another mult-million dollar deal for a old face.

With a seventh-inning announcement, Roger Clemens made himself a returning hero, a difference-maker, and a whole big pile of cash.

According to CNN SI.com, Clemens, who was on his way into retirement the last time he was being cheered wildly by a Yankee Stadium crowd, agreed to a one-year, $28-million contract to don pinstripes for the remainder of 2007. The deal is the biggest in baseball history by average annual value, and includes the highest single-season salary ever paid to a major-league player. Clemens won't get quite that much money, as he won't join the Yankees for another month, but two-thirds of that figure, about $18.5 million, makes for quite the incentive to return. The cost is greater to the Yankees; throw in the luxury tax hit on this addition to the payroll, and they're committing about $26 million.

But not all was good in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Hours after the fight, five people were killed in drunk driving crash on a dark street in Northwest Las Vegas.

It has been described as one of the worst drunk driving crashes in Las Vegas history. It happened late Saturday night on Farm Road near Tenaya. Police say 19-year-old Ronald Jayne Junior was drunk and speeding eastbound on Farm when he ran a stop sign and smashed into an SUV with a family inside. The impact ruptured the SUV's gas tank and caused it to burst into flames.

A 32-year-old woman, two boys between ages 8 and 11, and a girl around one-year-old were killed at the scene, while a fifth victim, an infant boy, died Sunday morning from his injuries. Three others survived the crash and were taken to UMC. Two are in critical condition and one in serious condition. Jayne was treated for moderate injuries, and arrested on at least 20 criminal charges, including DUI causing death and reckless driving causing death. Police say Jayne is now on suicide watch at the Clark County Detention Center.
